Food name

Melaka's chicken rice ball is a unique twist on the classic Hainanese chicken rice. Instead of serving loose rice, the fragrant, chicken-infused rice is shaped into compact balls, making it easier to eat. These rice balls are typically paired with tender steamed or roasted chicken, accompanied by a flavorful soy-based sauce and a side of chili and ginger paste for an extra kick.

鸡饭粒

The Rice Ball

Soft yet compact.

The grains are infused with garlic, ginger, and pandan leaves, then compressed into palm-sized spheres for a chewy, nostalgic bite.

鸡肉

The Chicken

Poached to tender perfection.

Soaked in a light soy sauce and sesame oil dressing, the flavour is clean and comforting. Some places offer roasted versions with crisp skin too.

黄瓜片

The Cucumber Slice

Fresh cucumber slices are more than a side.

The subtle crunch cuts through the richness of the rice and chicken, offering balance in every bite.

青葱/炸葱

Spring Onion/Fried Shallots

Lightly scattered over the rice or chicken.

It brings extra aroma and flavours to the dish.

Back in old Melaka, people found it hard to carry loose rice during long journeys or busy days at work. So, they came up with a smart idea—compress the rice into tight, round balls. It made the meal easier to pack, store, and eat on the go.
